The world’s first 5G Olympic Games ‘2018 PyeongChang Olympics

The 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games, held from February 9 to 25, 2018, was the world’s first 5G Olympic Games and was the venue of the festival to showcase Korea’s ICT technology.

Dilussion established the ICT Zone to experience KT’s 5G service and was responsible for operating the various realistic services so that the visitors could enjoy.

KT showed a 5G test network, which is 20 times faster than LTE, in major stadiums and 5G ICT experience zones, and presented realistic contents such as Time Slice, SyncView and OmniView.

Time slice, which provided a variety of angular views by 100 cameras simultaneously shot at 180 degree angles, attracted people because it was applied to many sports such as figure skating, short track, ice hockey and ski half pipe. The scenes that the audience could not see were able to see from various angles of every athlete’s move through the technology of 5G. SyncView provided images really feel like a bobsleigh athlete who came down the track by putting a camera KIT, a long-time KT has studied camera, inside the bobsled. With 5G’s low-delay technique, it was impossible to see the delay of the actual game and broadcast images. At cross-country stadiums with long hours and various routes, GPS was attached to the athletes’ bodies to check the locations of the athletes who I support by Omni View service with a few touches.

Winter sports and 5G technologies, which change the result at the speed of 1:100 seconds, have many similarities. People can enjoy realistic scenes at home through 5G technologies even if they are not currently in the stadium, has made it very attractive. According to KT, there were 800 foreign articles related to Pyeongchang 5G. We hope that starting with the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, a variety of realistic contents will be provided to the audience.
